The new frame has been designed for better performance for long and short distance journey. It has more cargo capacity since it uses 50 percent fewer parts and 60 percent fewer welds. This bike also has the redesigned isolated drive system. This will make acceleration smooth and steady. This bike has 6 gallon fuel tank to make sure you enough of fuel when touring a long trip. The new 2-1-2 exhaust system is passed under the frame which will make passenger free from heat.

This bike uses the air cooled twin cam 96 cu in engine (about 1600cc) with Electronic Fuel Injection. The styling and comfort has been improved also. The rear fender has been widened to fit the 180 mm rear tire. The wide glide front end has a large chrome quartz halogen Hiawatha headlight in a nacelle and a pair of running lights flanking it on the light bars and turn signals below them. Dark Custom adds a new rebel

Harley-Davidson recently unveiled the Iron 883 as the latest addition to its phantom Dark Custom line. The Darks aren’t a separate model line, but more like a sinister club or collection of single models culled from Harley’s prolific arsenal of existing V-Twins: the Dynas, Sportsters and Softails.
The underpinning theme with a Dark is pared-down, no-nonsense styling, eschewing chrome and brightness in favor of muted, basic color schemes – namely black. And for a few of them there’s a decidedly deliberate chopped and bobbed influence.

As a theme, Dark Custom didn’t make an official appearance until the January 2008 introduction of a Softail Springer that received the chopped/bobbed/black-out treatment and the name Cross Bones. It was at this Hollywood premiere-style unveiling of the ‘Bones that Willie G. Davidson and son Bill told the moto-world about the birth of this new shadow series of motorcycles.

Long before its official coming out party, the development of the Dark line started taking shape when the Softail Night Train showed up, and then a VRSC model, the Night Rod Special, went bad-ass in black. Soon thereafter the 1200cc Sportster-based Nightster appeared in the first half of 2007. The Iron 883 marks the second Sportster model to join the Dark Customs and follows closely to the Nightster’s motif.

To help jump start the introduction of the Iron 883 into the Dark Custom line, Harley-Davidson showcased the bike as part of an art gallery opening this past Saturday at the Robert Berman Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. The media got an early look on Friday, February 6th.

The theme of the gallery opening was “The Art of Rebellion,” and included 10 contemporary fringe artists, each creating a custom-painted Harley gas tank in conjunction with the gallery theme. Among invited creative types was street artist Shepard Fairey, most notable for his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” sticker that later evolved into the “OBEY Giant” collection. Fairey recently resurged in notoriety by creating the now-iconic Barack Obama HOPE posters used extensively in the former presidential candidate’s successful campaign for the Oval Office.

The gallery of tanks as well as a piece from the artists own collections will be on display and available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Art Matters, a charity that supports and encourages the exploration of new ideas and art. One hundred copies of a signed, limited-edition Shepard Fairey poster were given away at the event.

While many would argue that the established identity of Harley-Davidson motorcycles seems forever supplanted in the ideals and design regime of the 1950s, they occasionally take strides in more unique directions.

Friday's private art opening is just one such occasion, which publicly raised the collective consciousness of the underground and subculture known as the lo-brow art scene.

Finding a new motorcycle parked inside the stark-white gallery walls is nothing when compared to the juxtaposition of suit-clad connoisseurs and tattoo-sleeved artists, both sipping on another decidedly lo-brow adult beverage, tall-boys if you will, 24-oz PBRs flowed like the wine you might have expected in such a place. Instead, artists and their families, entourages and some lurking media folk milled about the charity event. All seeking a higher state of mind in the name of art and motorcycling.

Not dampened by the unusual week-long rains of Los Angeles, the party went on well into the night. Sighting such sub-famous artists as the Clayton brothers, SoCal's own Bob Dob and the Austin-dipped Spaniard Frank Kozik kept the otherwise subdued art opening spicy and full of life.

Proceeds from the custom-painted tanks and wall art went to artist-supporting foundation Art Matters. Kozik's piece sold almost immediately. Shepard Fairey unfortunately wasn't in attendance due to a retrospective show opening on the East Coast.

Harley-Davison recently added another shortie to its lineup. No, Willie G didn’t have another daughter, instead the Milwaukee motor company amended its Dark Custom line with a modified Sportster 883 Low. Following the Nightster as the second Sportster-based Dark Custom in Harley’s catalog, the Iron 883 becomes the sixth addition to the dark-themed club.

Some riders want simplicity in their escape mounts, while others prefer to be surrounded by computer technology like that found on the space shuttle flight deck. If you’re not into GPS, radar detectors and video cameras mounted to your handlebars, you might be into the short-pipe minimalism the Iron 883 delivers with its low-rise drag-style handlebar, bare-bones dashboard and overall lo-brow color scheme. Toss in the reliability of a warranted OEM motorcycle and you’ll be pleased as rum-spiked-punch to get your hands on the latest in Harley-Davidson’s Dark Custom line.

Our pal Pete Brissette reported from the artistically lo-brow model unveiling held at a Santa Monica California art gallery last month. Mingling with artwork from Shepard Fairey and Frank Kozik, suit-clad connoisseurs and tattoo-sleeved artists got a peek at the Iron 883 alongside the attending member of the press. When the wallet opens, Harley-Davidson is there to deliver just what the market wants. While Harley’s CVO line appeals to a buyer that wants a bike that can blind every person within 50 feet of their exceptionally-chromed scoots, H-D now makes a bike that’s ready to blend in with the authentic nitty-gritty world of biker-dom, perfectly camouflaging to the greasy underbelly of society where ‘real bikers’ come from – if you ask an outsider. That’s what Harley calls the “raw side of the road.”

Harley’s blacked-out and matte-finished “Dark Custom” line has proven to be attractive to younger buyers, appealing in both style and price. H-D sold 29,000 bikes to people under the age of 35 in 2008, and the Dark Custom line holds particular interest for the younger demographic. Sales of DCs were up 24% in ’08, aided by the addition of the bobber-like Cross Bones.

With just one operating unit and 10 journalists at the gallery opening, Motorcycle.com didn’t get a crack at looking cool that night. So Kevin Duke and myself hopped on a jet and met up with H-D Press manager Paul James in Daytona Beach earlier this month to get us a few miles in the saddle.

Spry and steeped in style, the newest member of the Dark Custom line hasn’t changed too much from it’s more commonly known iteration, the Sportster 883 Low. They share the same narrow steel frame and lowered dual-shock rear suspension setups. Up front, the Iron sports rubber fork boots to give it that retro-cool look.

Where the bike’s geometry lacks in legroom for riders over 5’10”, the Iron makes up with attitude. It’s delivered with a menacing matte-black paint scheme, Sportster-standard dual exhaust pipes, a 26.3” high solo saddle (unladen; same as the Nightster and 883 Low) and a lighter overall weight. The three-inch shorter total length makes for a light turning machine, limited however by its lock-to-lock steering radius. I think the Victory choppers we also rode that week made a tighter circle. Luckily, Harley also shaved 18 pounds off the Low, which helps when pushing the Iron around parking lots.

The Iron’s tighter and tougher design compromise is a riding position too cramped for large riders however. “Even at my modest five-foot-eight height,” says EIC Kevin Duke, “the position of the footpegs caused my knees to ride oddly high. The Iron’s reduced-travel rear shocks and thin seat are best suited for short riders.”

And if you’ve never ridden a Sportster before, expect the air cleaner cover to feel “in the way” of your thigh. The otherwise very narrow feeling bike is asymmetrically unbalanced by the protrusion of the air cleaner. In an effort to provide adequate cornering clearance, the slammed Iron has mid-mount footpegs that felt unnaturally high to Kevin.

When we got the Iron into the sunny skies and straight roads of Florida’s coastline, we can see the 883 really shine, despite Harley’s best effort to keep the Iron dark and cool. Pete thought the staggered dual pipes should have been given the black treatment instead of shiny chrome, but I personally think a black pipe set would have ratted-out the bike too much. Pipes are the soul of a Harley; I favor them shining both day and night. In my opinion, Harley struck the perfect balance between blackened bits and chrome tips on the Iron 883. Dark enough to run with the sinister sister Dynas and Softtails in the DC line, yet still a machine with its own character.

“Stylistically, the Iron is a great success,” remarks Mr. Duke. “The matte finishes give it some rat-bike cool, and subtle touches like the fork gaiters give in a nice tinge of nostalgia. I also love the integration of the brake light into the turnsignals and the side-mount license-plate holder I expect to see on other bikes in the future.”

Every rider is unique. But when you’re in Florida for Bike Week, it’s hard as hell to stand out in the crowd. You can dress up like a leather-dipped Santa Claus, ride a four-wheeled “motorcycle” down Main Street or show up on the world’s longest bike and you still get swallowed up by the magnitude of the event.

Make the event work for you alone and ride what fits your body and your wallet. Over-chromed beasts and minimalist mounts alike are welcome in Daytona, and Harley can deliver both of those experiences. For the economically minded buyer and newbie alike, the sub-$8K Iron 883 strikes black gold.

“The Iron 883 truly delivers an authentic Harley experience for less than $8,000,” Duke concludes. “It provides a deep, soulful soundtrack so familiar to us all, and it looks like a much pricier item than it is.”

2009 Harley-Davidson Touring Models Review

Harley's touring bikes ride a robust new chassis

The big news coming out of Milwaukee for 2009 is an all-new chassis for the touring bikes in Harley’s line-up. We sampled the new frame during our time at the 2009 CVO launch on a couple of the touring bikes a few weeks ago. Now we take an even more in-depth look at this new chassis found on all seven bikes in Harley’s touring line. We also ride the latest low-slung machine to join the V-Rod family, and get a peek at some of the updates to the rest of the 2009 Harley-Davidson models.
At the CVO models unveiling just a couple of weeks ago the Motor Company gave us the info that touring models will now have an all-new two-piece frame that is welded together robotically. An added bonus, in addition to much improved handling, was an increase in gross vehicle weight rating (up by 100 lbs).
After 28 years of using the same basic frame architecture, Harley decided it was time to debut a new chassis to continue their dominance of the touring segment. “This was the biggest undertaking since the creation of the platform,” said Ben Wright, 2009 Touring Project Lead and Platform Staff Engineer.

The project started as far back as ’02 with preliminary research, then really got boiling when Harley conducted face-to-face interviews with attendees that collectively rode millions of miles to H-D’s 100th anniversary in 2003.
Harley staff would interact with customers at various shows and events, going so far as to have riders weigh their loaded touring sleds on a scale to see how much the touring bikes were carrying. According to Wright it wasn’t unusual to have a customer avoid the scales out of fear of how far past GVWR they had gone. It was becoming clear to Harley that a more robust frame was needed.
No longer just a collection of hand-welded steel tubes, the new frame – and what is commonly referred to on most other motorcycles as the subframe – is now made from various investment cast, forged and stamped pieces. An unforeseen advantage to having the tail (sub) frame bolt on is the lessening of the likelihood that a whole bike will be totaled by insurance companies.
'It was becoming clear to Harley that a more robust frame was needed'
Wright informed us that only recently a test unit or two were able to be snatched from the clutches of total waste, as the tail frame could simply be unbolted and replaced with a new piece, putting the bike back in action. And in a victory for new tech, total frame parts count has been reduced to 40 pieces versus the 90 bits that made up the previous frame. Without going into specifics, Harley engineering staff touted increased torsional stiffness but not necessarily increased lateral rigidity.
Carrying the Twin Cam 96 V-Twin powerplant in the new frame are new vibe-isolating engine mounts. Ditching the tri-mount system on the old chassis, the new system now uses two mounts in front instead of one. “This gives us a lot of control of the powertrain within the frame, helps us reduce sidle shake and is another key element in the tooling of the chassis,” explained Wright.
New dimensions include moderately increased trail and a 0.5-inch growth of the wheelbase gained in the new swingarm that’s now wider and stiffer than the previous swinger. New triple clamps hold a front suspension re-tuned for improved ride quality; the air-suspended shocks also have been recalibrated for better handling and comfort.
Keeping the new frame rolling smooth is a 17-inch wheel up front that is increased from 16 inches – Road King Classic retains a 16-inch front hoop. The rear wheel is still a 16 on all bikes but is now 5 inches wide, and the “rear compensator” (read: cush drive) is now integrated into the hub rather than being a bolt-on application and carries a 68-tooth sprocket, up 2 teeth from last year. Five of the seven touring models also get new, bombproof-looking 28-spoke cast-aluminum wheels.
Dunlop went to great lengths to craft a new multi-compound tire specifically for the FL platform. The 180/65-16 D407 Multi-Tread rear tire (found on all bikes) has tread life reportedly increased 27% thanks to the harder center compound developed with the bike’s higher load capacity in mind, while the softer side compound allows riders to confidently access the new chassis’ increased lean angle.
Form follows function, as the saying goes, and in this instance a wider rear fender sporting a simplified and lower license plate assembly with LED lighting (on FLHR, FLGT, FLHX and FLTR models only) covers the widened rear wheel/tire. An increased load capacity of 5 pounds in each of the saddle bags and the Tour Pak on models so equipped comes courtesy of new support racks for said saddle bags and Pak.
Finally, though nothing has fundamentally changed with the engine, a re-routed left-side exhaust header pipe now snakes under the bike for improved rider comfort via a reduction in exhaust heat. The head pipes are now a single-piece construction and thereby eliminate unnecessary welds that can, over time, be weak spots for potential exhaust leaks.
Further protecting rider and passenger from the miserable heat wafting up from the engine is what Harley calls its Rear Cylinder Cut-Out system. EITMS (Engine Idle Temperature Management System) will calculate a myriad of data and determine when to stop fueling to the rear cylinder with the net affect being a cooler engine when you’re jammed up and sitting idly in rush hour traffic. This system, known colloquially as “parade mode” was previously available as a mid-year 2008 retro-fit to address TC96 heat issues on FLs.
For 2009, all FL (touring) models will now allow this feature to be rider activated. In simple terms, when at a stop with the engine idling, the rider can roll the twistgrip forward for a duration of 5 seconds at which time the cruise control activation light will indicate that RARCC (Rider-Activated Rear Cylinder Cut-Out) has been de-activated or activated.
Phew! Whole lotta changes happening to the basic elements of the touring bikes.
After sidling up to an attractive blue and silver two-tone Ultra Classic Electra Glide in order to enjoy the pastoral beauty of grape-a-licious Sonoma County, CA, I can happily report that all of the effort put into the new touring frame was worth it. Gone is the disconcerting “seeking” feeling the front-end on previous rigs would exhibit when rolling the superslab.
Wonderfully absent too is the eye-popping hinge-in-the-middle-of-the-frame sensation many of the top-heavy touring beasts gave when trying to maneuver at slower speeds and in tight, parking-lot-like environs. Bending the big bike through fast-paced sweepers revealed a distinct lack of flex and wallow commonly experienced on the previous chassis.
Yes, this new, beefy two-piece kit is a boon for the FL platform. The only thing we’re left to do is badger the Milwaukee-based bike maker with the question, “Why’d ya wait so long? (sniff sniff)”

New 2009 Harley-Davidson Tri Glide Ultra Classic trike

In case anyone was wondering, this Ultra Classic-based trike isn’t a kit trike, but the real deal from Harley. The great thing, according to H-D staff, about the new touring frame is that it allows flexibility in various uses. Case in point is the Tri Glide. The frame has been strengthened for the additional weight inherent in a trike, and a steering damper was added. Otherwise, it has “all the features of an Ultra Classic,” according to Jim Hofmann, Director of Core Motorcycle Product Planning.
This bike isn’t a servicar reborn but a whole new unit. It sports triple clamps unique to the Tri Glide and more relaxed steering geometry. Additionally, the large box at the rear has 4.3 cubic-feet of storage with a weight capacity of 50 lbs. Both rear fenders can be removed independent of the rest of the bodywork in the event of a bang up, and the fender brake lights also function as turn signals.
The 2009 Tri Glide Ultra Classic retails for $29,999. The electric reverse option is available for an additional $1,195.
